"I JUST WANT TO SLEEP" SLEEP FILM REVIEW

Image
By Chris Mutuku (Posted 24 October, 2022) The best part about content creation especially filmmaking is that, we create content to give the society a taste of what it feels to be someone else. Gives the audience an opportunity to feel the character’s pain, relate to their suffering and laugh when they do. Sleep a film produced by Lodeki Vincent and directed by the super director Eric Mdagaya did just that. Shot in familiar Kenyan location, the film is easy to relate. Makau played by youthful actor Bryan Kabugi is a boy undergoing past traumas caused by his abusive father. Just like many teenagers in Africa and Kenya in general, Makau struggles with the trauma of being molested by his closest family-his father. Through a flashback scene, the father (George Mo) is seen in a swimming pool together with his son acting inappropriate.  The guilt leads to vengeance. Following his previous uncomfortable encounter at the girlfriend’s House, Makau seaks revenge to sub...

KAHUHA TAKES HER AUDIENCE ON A HILARIOUS SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

Image
By Chris Mutuku (Posted October, 17 2022) Last Saturday was remarkable as Esther Kahuha made a triumphant entry to the stage with the sensational 'Kuna dawa' gospel song by Esther Wahome. After a three months break, her audience were ready to receive their dose of packed stand up comedy based on a fictional character only known to herself.  Having attended the man made woman stand up comedy show twice, I marvel that the show transformed from stand up comedy to  hilarious life experiences of Esther’s fictional character.  Her funs, friends and family gathered at the Kenya National Theatre’s Ukumbi mdogo after a busy week to laugh out the fatigue. Dressed in a mustard yellow pants, astonishing beautiful blouse and black sneakers, the glamorous lady began by teasing her audience and even calling some by names. Her joy couldn’t be hidden as she called out Roy, Margaretta and Steenie from the audience just to mention a few. It is clear that she has established a sp...

(Written by Chris Mutuku 12 October 2022) For many years, Nollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood have dominated both the global and local film space. As a result, Kenyans have been forced to consume content produced outside the country. But this narrative has since changed after film producers discovered new ways to distribute their Kenyan produced content. Since the Pandemic hit the country, and entirely the whole world, many film production companies both in the country and outside Kenya got immensely affected with most film producers forced to delay production and even release of their projects. The most affected being forced to call off their filmmaking career. Despite all these challenges, many films and TV Series were produced during this period. One of the films being Safari which was shot in November 2020 at the pick of the Pandemic.  Safari a Kenyan film produced by Rocque pictures Ltd, directed by Bill Afwani and distributed by Rushlake Media is set to have it's w...

Kenyan Movie ‘Subira’ Starring Brenda Wairimu Is Now Showing On Netflix

Image
(Written by Chris Mutuku , 1st October,2022) Subira, shot in two main locations; Lamu and Nairobi is a film like no other. I must admit I had not done the film justice by delaying to add it to my watch list since its premiere in November 2018 until late this year when it was officially made available for viewers on Netflix.  The scenes in this film have been well thought of. Every activity and action happens in a simultaneously spectacular and a very well thought sequence. The welcoming views of the ocean and the setting sun play a big role in convincing me to venture into the imaginary world of Subira. After the establishment shot of the ocean, what follows is a scene of the star in this amazing production, Subira and her fisherman father(Abubakar Mwenda) enjoying one of the best experiences the coastal region has to offer, swimming. This middle aged gentleman is giving his daughter some useful swimming lessons. Young Subira with so much enthusiasm, enjoys the lessons...

Image
By Chris Mutuku (September 29, 2022) Esther Kahuha or Madam President as known to her audience who enjoy every bit of her work is back with yet another episode of ‘Man made woman’. After a success in the previous shows, the stand up comedy directed by Dennis Ndenga and produced by Ivy Esther Wanjiku, will be back in the Kenya Cultural Centre on this October 15th. Judging from the first, second, and third episodes of the show which saw her manage to fill the Kenya National Theatre's Ukumbi mdogo, it is with no doubt that, the audience expect nothing but to crack their ribs once again after a break of almost three months. Her story telling skills seem to have won the hearts of these young and old comedy lovers. Speaking to some of the people who have managed to attend all of her previous shows, they confirm to us that her idea of sharing what we believe is her personal experience or of a fictional character known to her, through comedy works magic to them. “ I...
